About
The Reading Shepherd
Hi, I’m Beth – a fully qualified, experienced and dedicated teacher. I’m also a mum of two school aged children.
I began teaching 18 years ago and have been fortunate to teach in both primary and secondary schools, from regional Queensland over to England and back to Brisbane. A number of years ago, my attention turned to reading intervention and I haven’t looked back. I have undergone specialist training in the Sounds-Write approach to be able to offer the best instruction possible. Seeing the impact that a high quality reading intervention such as Sounds-Write has on our little people is unbelievably rewarding. It makes it hard not to love what I do!
Every child should be granted the opportunity to learn to read regardless of background, learning difficulties or stage of their education. I’m passionate about ensuring children learn how to read using an evidence-based approach so they are equipped with the knowledge and skills to become fluent readers for life.
If children with reading difficulties are identified early and provided with an evidence-based intervention, they have a significantly higher chance of becoming a fluent reader. And that is what has brought me to launch The Reading Shepherd.
OUR APPROACH
The Reading Shepherd provides ongoing, specialised literacy intervention for primary aged children in the area of reading, spelling and writing.
"Sounds-Write is probably the finest system of literacy tuition in the English language"
We follow the Sounds-Write program which is a very highly regarded approach worldwide. Sounds-Write is an evidence-based program which is systematic, cumulative, sequential and multi-sensory. That means:
- Children are explicitly taught, in a highly structured manner, the concepts that underpin our writing system, knowledge of the alphabet code and the three essential skills (segmenting, blending and phoneme manipulation) required for reading and spelling.
- Concepts are gradually built upon and students are provided with many opportunities to practise them in order to move their knowledge and skills into long-term memory.
- The program is logically organised - concepts progress from simple to complex.
- Practise is centred around touch, sight, sound and speech to not only aid concentration, but to allow children to learn that there is a direct connection between what they see and what they hear.
Services
The Reading Shepherd
At The Reading Shepherd, we take pride in knowing that there is no room for guessing, no time wasting and no use of outdated programs.
- Students complete an initial assessment to identify their existing knowledge and skill level.
- Using this information, we create a plan to bridge the gaps and move forward in building their knowledge and skills.
- We offer private one-to-one tuition to allow for targeted support, maximising individual student learning.
- We offer a choice of weekly or twice-weekly sessions.
- Sessions can either be 45 minutes or 60 minutes in duration, depending on factors including the age of the child and their learning goals.
- Our sessions are run in 10-week blocks in line with Queensland school term dates.
- Commencement may occur any time during the term (subject to availability).

Client Feedback
"Beth has been tutoring our daughter (Year 2) for the last 6 months. We cannot recommend her highly enough. We have seen fantastic, heart-warming improvements in our daughter's aptitude, understanding and confidence. She loves her lessons and reading has become fun rather than a cause of frustration. We are so glad we found Beth and that she continues to help our daughter on her reading journey." J&E
